Views 392

Virtual humans, who are more human-like than humans themselves, are leading the advertising and entertainment markets. Digital humans like Lil Miquela, who mainly collaborate with fashion brands, achieved revenue of $17 million in 2022 by appearing in advertisements for luxury brands, as well as creating content on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Similarly, domestic digital human 'Rogi' is expanding its activities by appearing in advertisements for hotels and automotive companies.

Digital humans are virtual beings created using computer graphics (CG) technology to the point where it is difficult to distinguish them from real humans. In the past, creating digital humans required huge costs and time, but recent advancements in AI, cloud, and graphics technology have made production easier and more commercialized.

Digital human company Cleon (CEO Jin Seung-hyuk) succeeded in attracting 9.5 billion won (Series A) investment by being recognized for its digital human creation technology. Cleon's digital human creation technology can generate digital humans with just one face photo and a 30-second voice, and can create digital humans that can communicate with real people in real-time by combining conversational models such as ChatGPT. Based on this technology, Cleon's digital humans are actively utilized in various business fields, especially in entertainment and specialized knowledge areas. In the first quarter of 2024, digital humans using celebrity IPs (intellectual property) such as influencers and entertainers are scheduled to be released.

Technological development for digital human development is also active. Virtual studio company VIVE Studios (CEO Kim Se-kyu) is developing digital human technology optimized by utilizing adjustment information for various assets required in real-time during actual virtual production processes. Trycontech Co., Ltd. (CEO Hwang Hee-seung), a metaverse company, has developed technology that applies digital human technology and its own developed educational metaverse. The Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (Director Bang Seung-chan) has also developed technology to create conversational digital humans based on user-input photo information. Thus, technological development for digital humans is active.

In the future, as digital humans improve their interaction and work capabilities, they are expected to play a role as assistants to humans. With the advancement of digital human production technology, they will become more similar to humans and can achieve emotional interaction with humans through emotional computing. With the integration of RPA and super AI, it is expected that digital humans will be able to assist in tasks and even participate in content creation, serving as virtual friends, work colleagues, and co-creators. Expansion of activity areas to the real world is expected as integration with physical objects such as cars and robots occurs.

Digital humans are expected to be utilized in various fields by traversing the boundaries between virtual and reality. Therefore, it is necessary to explore various opportunities for creating value through digital humans.
