[BLT Insight]AI-based content blocking technology in Korea

Views 166

Blocking harmful content is a key issue for all SNS platforms. The governments of 41 states in the U.S. have claimed that Facebook and Instagram's excessive addictiveness is harming the mental health of minors, and have filed a lawsuit against Meta (Facebook). The European Commission (EC) has also requested information on measures to block harmful content. Thus, governments around the world recognize the problem of harmful content on SNS platforms and are institutionally introducing content blocking measures.

Harmful content blocking technology previously relied on hash values to block content. The hash value-based technology automatically processed the same content based on the hash value of the content requested for blocking by users. Recently, the technological trend has shifted from the existing image hash value-based processing to developing "adult (spam) image recommendation systems" by utilizing machine learning techniques and ensemble methods. However, this ensemble-based blocking technology is still in its early technological stage.

Korean startups are also developing harmful content blocking technologies by applying AI-based techniques. PYLER Co., Ltd. (CEO Oh Jae-ho) has succeeded in attracting investment (Series A, 10.5 billion won) due to its recognized AI-based harmful content blocking technology. PYLER's harmful content blocking solution, AiD, prevents the exposure of inappropriate content (adult, hate-inducing, misconduct-inducing, etc.) that could damage advertisers' brand images. This technological prowess has been recognized in the field of video AI, with papers on its proprietary video search technology being accepted at the world's leading artificial intelligence conference, CVPR (Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Conference), in 2023, and winning an award at ICCV (International Conference on Computer Vision). Based on this investment, they plan to strengthen their in-house model development capabilities and lead the market as a safety startup.

Jiranjigyo Data Co., Ltd., a domestic data company, has also developed a technology that can block obscene content even when codecs are changed, by verifying harmful content based on DNA (feature) generation technology. This solves the hash value change issue, enabling accurate obscene content blocking and preventing over-blocking. Additionally, Turingk Co., Ltd. has developed harmful content blocking technology. Turingk Co., Ltd. has developed a technology that can monitor and block based on harmfulness by applying blacklist site URL and DNS analysis techniques. This enables user-customized blocking and prevention of personal information leakage.

The BLT Research Center predicts, "The harmful content blocking market is expected to experience dramatic growth. These technological changes will present new opportunities for companies to develop related technologies." They added, "Securing rights to AI-based hash value analysis and DNA-based content analysis technologies is expected to be a good strategy."
