[BLT Insight]Natural Language Processing (NLP) in Korea

Views 357

2023 was the year of ChatGPT. ChatGPT is an AI-based chatbot developed by OpenAI, engaging in conversations with users and providing answers to questions like a human. Chatbots are AI-based platforms for interacting with users and can offer various services. The core technology of such chatbot platforms is Natural Language Processing (NLP), which enables understanding and responding to natural language. NLP involves preprocessing human language expressed in various words and languages into corresponding data and providing output.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a field of artificial intelligence (AI) that enables understanding, generating, and manipulating human language. This NLP technology can be further categorized into Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and Natural Language Generation (NLG). NLU is the technology to understand the structure and meaning of all human languages, enabling communication by analyzing language semantics, intent, entity recognition, and sentiment analysis. NLG is the technology to generate natural language from structured data, providing stages of content determination, natural language generation, and realization to offer suitable responses to user queries.

Domestic companies in Korea are also actively developing chatbot technology. Catius Co., Ltd. (CEO An Minji), a domestic company specializing in chatbots for early childhood education, succeeded in attracting investment (Pre-A) by being recognized for its technological capabilities. Catius operates Cati, an educational chatbot applied to early childhood companion dolls. Cati can recognize insecure pronunciations of toddlers, provide personalized conversations on various topics, and offer various contents such as fairy tales and songs tailored to toddlers' needs. Based on this investment, Catiers plans to enter the childcare market, expand globally through marketing, and expand its market.

In addition, various other companies are actively developing technology for chatbots. SK Corporation (CEO Jang Donghyun) has developed scenario generation technology to solve the problem of designing scenarios for chatbots according to existing platform-specific scenarios. Through this, efficiency in designing chatbots for various platforms can be achieved. Mindset Co., Ltd. (CEO Lee Ilyoung) has developed multi-domain natural language processing technology to enable learning in various domains, enhancing the versatility of natural language processing. Thus, the development of chatbots by domestic companies is proactive.

The government is also actively introducing chatbots, especially in the fields of public service and education. AI chatbots introduced by each department provide services and deliver desired results based on natural language processing technology analyzed through big data. However, there are still limitations in providing services within a limited scope. In addition to public services, each regional education office is introducing educational chatbots aimed at students to provide comprehensive education and learning schedule management. Thus, the government's introduction of chatbots is active.

The BLT Research Center team at the patent firm stated, "The market for chatbots based on natural language processing technology is expected to expand rapidly. It seems important for companies to formulate response strategies to such technological changes." They emphasized that "chatbot technology is an important technology for learning, and algorithm development and data collection related to relevant technologies are important, requiring securing rights." BLT, as a partner selected by over 2,000 innovative startups as of 2024, has been supporting companies' growth and success through IP acquisition, response strategy formulation, as well as utilizing IP for business support such as attracting investments and technology special listing.
