BLT InsightIn the age of online platforms, trademarks create competitive advantage.

31 Oct 2025

Just a few years ago, the primary stage for businesses was offline. Dealerships, distribution networks, and brick-and-mortar stores were the center of transactions, but now the situation has completely changed. Consumers routinely search for and purchase products through mobile apps and online platforms, and for businesses, online platforms have become not just a sales channel but a core stage for promoting and growing their brand.

Therefore, a strategic approach tailored to online platforms is necessary. Especially since special benefits exist that are only available to trademark-holding companies, businesses must understand and prepare for these.

1. Benefits of Platform Trademark Registration – The Shield of “Official Brand”

Amazon operates a Brand Registry program. It recognizes only trademark-registered companies as ‘official brands,’ and this goes beyond simply placing a mark next to the name. Brands can create their own store pages, and apply brand stories and premium images to their detail pages. Most importantly, even if unauthorized sellers list the same products, brands can immediately request sanctions.

Naver is no exception. Through its Brand Package, it grants trademark-registered companies exclusive catalog management rights and eligibility to operate a Brand Store. Consumers gain trust in “official brands endorsed by Naver,” while companies can clearly distinguish themselves from counterfeit goods and imitation brands.

Ultimately, trademark registration becomes both a shield protecting your brand and a megaphone promoting yourself on the platform.

2. Why the platform offers benefits – “The platform survives only if the brand survives.”

Many people question, “Why would a platform offer additional benefits to trademark-holding companies?” The reason is clear. If counterfeit goods flood the market, consumer trust collapses. When shoppers leave thinking, “This place is full of knockoffs,” the entire platform suffers. Furthermore, failing to address infringement risks legal liability disputes, making safeguards essential.

Above all, partnerships with brands directly translate into revenue. The more brands operate dedicated stores and invest in marketing, the higher the transaction volume and commissions become. Furthermore, high-quality content managed directly by official brands improves the consumer experience, increases satisfaction, and ultimately boosts purchase conversion rates.

In other words, the platform's benefits to trademark-registered companies are “a strategy that appears to help brands, but is actually designed to protect the platform itself.”

3. Considerations When Filing a Trademark Application – “Developing a Platform-Specific Trademark Strategy”

Registering a trademark does not automatically grant recognition across all platforms. To fully benefit from a platform, several strategic considerations are necessary.

  • Securing Trademarks for Actual Use: During platform reviews, the focus is on whether the brand name and trademark rights are consistently used across actual product photos, reviews, and detailed pages. Therefore, securing trademarks that align with actual usage is essential. To enhance practicality, consider registering the brand name as a ‘text trademark’ composed solely of letters.

  • Verify designated product categories: For example, if you sell cosmetics but register a trademark for clothing, the platform will reject it, stating “the actual product does not match the trademark rights.” Since a single application can designate multiple product categories simultaneously, it is crucial to establish a cost-effective trademark strategy.

  • Preparing for overseas expansion: Amazon requires trademark rights in the country where you intend to sell. For example, to enter the U.S. market, you must register your trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Relying solely on domestic trademarks makes it difficult to enjoy brand benefits on overseas platforms.

Ultimately, trademark registration is more than just “protecting a name”; it is a task requiring strategic preparation tailored to the platform's review criteria and operational methods.

Conclusion

Trademark registration is no longer optional. Without protecting your brand in the online marketplace, growth is impossible. Beyond simply securing legal rights, trademark registration on platforms has been the most effective tool for growing your brand and building trust with consumers.

"Should I protect my brand, or grow it?” Now, you must do both. Only companies that wisely utilize the platform's systems can survive long-term in the online market.
